Um épico famoso sobre a Rainha do Nilo. Quer seja mais conhecido pelo casal Taylor-Richard Burton (que se conheceram e apaixonaram durante as filmagens), ou pela soma colossal gasta nele ou pelas advertências lúgubres que recebeu, o filme, embora visualmente espectacular, é uma dura prova de quatro horas. Notorious epic about the Queen of the Nile. Whether it's more noted for the Taylor-Richard Burton couple (they met and fell in love during the shooting) or the colossal sum spent on it or the dreary notices it received, the film, though spectacular looking, is a tough four-hour viewing. Some say that Fassbinder was past the point of dissipation as he worked on Jean Genet's 1953 existential homoerotic novel of lust and murder. There is no denying that the final result lacks the cohesion of the director's greatest works, but it reveals an artist perilously venturing into new frontiers. Brad Davis (who died of AIDS in 1992) is Querelle, a sexually brazen, amoral sailor who struts his sensuality for all to admire and swoon. A drug smuggler, Querelle kills a sailor and takes refuge at a seedy seaside brothel, where he begins to discover his homosexual side. Franco Nero is his commanding officer who succumbs to Querelle's masculine swagger and Jeanne Moreau is the chanteuse who also lusts after him. A tale of violence, passion and intense sexual submission. With stylized, purposefully artificial sets of the port of Brest, complete with cock-shaped towers on the seawall and other exaggerated phallic symbols, this is Fassbinder's final and, oddly enough, gayest film.

Oshima's first film in English is a strange, haunting drama. It is set in a Japanese POW camp, where the prisoners are treated with contempt and brutality, and centers on a test of wills between a martinet commander (Ryuichi Sakamoto) and a British major (David Bowie). The Commandant, informed that the new prisoner is the epitome of the British Soldier, wishes to test his own ideas about what constitutes the perfect soldier. Japanese music superstar Sakamoto also composed the score.

Loretta's parents have equally complex romantic lives; her father is involved in a long-term affair, while her mother is avidly pursued by a college professor…John Patrick Shanley's script is brimming with wonderful vignettes and acute observations about Italian-American families. Cher, Dukakis (terrific as the mother), and Shanley won Oscars for their work.
