A história é um filme-dentro-de-um-filme: Cassy é uma tórrida realizadora independente de 22 anos que trava a batalha de criar o seu filme-revelação. A sua atitude despreocupada combina perfeitamente com o seu estilo de lésbica Casanova, até que Lauren aparece em cena, uma entrada imprevista que irá mudar dramaticamente tudo para Cassy. Entre infrutíferas sessões de "casting", ensaios frustrantese enquanto sofre nas mãos de alguns actores arrogantes, Cassy dá por si encantada por Lauren, uma hetero comprometida, o que causa instantaneamente problemas para o seu próprio ego. Apesar de não muito trabalhado e de não ser perfeito, "Outtakes" vence pelo argumento realmente convincente e algumas actuações de primeira classe.

The story is of a film-within-a-film: Cassy is hot 22-year-old indie director locked in a battle to make her breakthrough feature. Her devil-may-care persona matches perfectly with her lesbian Casanova lifestyle, until Lauren appears on set, an unassuming entrance that will dramatically change everything for Cassy. In the midst of fruitless casting sessions, frustrating rehearsals and while suffering at the hands of some royal diva actors, Cassy finds herself charmed by the straight-laced Lauren, instantly causing problems for her own ego. Not polished, not perfect, "Outtakes" wins out nonetheless with a really convincing script and some first class performances.

Brandon's short hair, boyish features, cowboy clothes and confident smile help sketch his natural charm; yet it is those qualities independent of gender - innocence, optimism, tenderness and loyalty - which win the love of Lana and the trust of John. Ignorance, fear and a threatened sense of manhood, however, overcome the town's "real men" and determine the story's violent dénouement.Although "Boys Don't Cry" touches upon the issues that concern the difference between being a lesbian and being a woman who feels she is a man, the film is most succesful in emphasizing the other characters' ignorance-driven hatred and their use of violence as a manifestation of their particular sense of "manhood".

A young man arrives in Falls City, a small town in rural Nebraska, at the beginning of December 1993. 20-year-old Brandon Teena is a stranger to this town but his friendly manner and youthful charm soon win him friends among his peers. The town's young girls are particularly attracted to him and he has no difficulty finding a girlfriend. However, only three weeks later, on Christmas Eve, Brandon is brutally beaten up and raped by two of his friends. This astonishing act of fury was prompted by his friends' discovery that Brandon is in fact a girl. A week later, on New Year's Eve, a few miles out of Falls City, the same two young men murder Brandon and the young couple at whose home Brandon had sought refuge.Susan Muska and Gréta Ólafsdottir's documentary takes a closer look at this case.
