This session evokes pioneering examples of expression of queer culture in the decade that witnessed the rise of the music video as a tool for promotion. A first batch recalls Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Dead Or Alive, Divine and Bronski Beat, all of which crossed pop with the heritage of dance music. The expression of androgyny in Boy George is represented by Culture Club. The prehistory of lesbian visibility in music videos is illustrated by k.d. lang and Indigo Girls. This session also recalls a visionary experience by Pop Dell’Arte and a littleseen video by Pet Shop Boys. And the art of Derek Jarman at the service of pop, with music by Marc Almond and The Smiths.

In 1989, for the first tour of the Pet Shop Boys (who already had a respected and recognised career, albeit without live experiences), British filmmaker Derek Jarman created a series of small films to be projected on stage, behind the musicians, on two large screens. These seven films comprise the first part of this session. Music videos quite unlike the most usual ones, in which however we can discern, as well as the clear presence of Jarman, the identity of the music and musicians. The session also includes two old short films by Jarman, with a new soundtrack in the form of Pet Shop Boys songs, as well as the two official music video the director filmed for the band.
