O striptease é indissociável da história da exploração da mulher, em termos de uma economia patriarcal, bem como de uma rígida imagética do corpo e das políticas do olhar. Desde inícios dos anos 1990, o 'novo burlesco', derivado de algumas estéticas teatrais dos anos 1930, tem trabalhado este género com humor e uma consciência do self, procurando uma nova experiência do corpo feminino enquanto mapa auto-determinado de atracção. Neste caso, a carga sexual é complementada com um jogo quase dançado de poses e gestos que não têm como alvo o olhar masculino, propagando antes imagens alternativas do corpo. Com Aria de Mustang, a segunda parte de uma planeada trilogia, Katrina Daschner faz uma referência muito clara a este género, ao mesmo tempo em que o expande com signos e imagens lésbico-queer e também sadomasoquistas, que não têm qualquer espaço de expressão nos comuns sistemas representativos hetero-normativos. Desde o início, Daschner clarifica o contexto no qual se posiciona, ou seja, a que olhos e ouvidos se expõe, através das suas performances. Candidatas, que trabalham no meio artístico e cultural lésbico-queer de Viena, vestidas de trajos de equitação, emolduram este cenário eléctrico e glamouroso como se de um coro grego se tratasse, funcionando como ruidosas comentadoras que concluem assim o vídeo. A coreografia da performance, na qual Daschner e duas amantes (todas em figurinos fetichistas) se dão prazer, desenvolve-se a par de uma linha melódica repetida, assinada por uma banda local, os Bonanza Jellybean: "I know, that I am gorgeous, that is nothing new. When I go to bed tonight it will definitely not be with you." Apesar da clara rejeição expressa na letra, um fitar directo e autónomo da câmara, mantendo contacto directo com o espectador, revela-se o gesto que define, quer as performers, quer o coro. Mesmo quando uma cena pornográfica remata o final da performance, as actrizes não baixam o olhar com vergonha; ao invés, as suas expressões permanecem controladas: uma releitura queer da situação existente que encena um lascivo namoro com a câmara. The striptease is accompanied by the history of exploitation of women, in terms of a patriarchal economy as well as a rigid body image and regime of the gaze. Since the early 1990s, "new Burlesque," following from the theatre forms of the 1930s, has net this genre with humour and self awareness and attempted to re-open the female body as a self-determined field of attraction. The sexual charge is, in this case, supplemented with a dance-like game of poses and gestures that does not aim at a purely male gaze, and propagates alternative body images. With Aria de Mustang, the second part of a planned trilogy, Katrina Daschner makes a very clear reference to this genre, but at the same time expands it with queer-lesbian, and also sadomasochistic signs and images, which have no place in common hetero-normative representational systems. Right from the start, Daschner clarifies the context that she positions herself in, that is, which eyes and ears she exposes herself to with her performance. Proponents working in Vienna's queer-lesbian art and culture scene dressed in riding outfits frame the glamorous sparkling setting like a Greek chorus, and function as roaring commentators who conclude the video. The choreography of the performance, in which Daschner and two lovers (all in fetish costumes) enjoy themselves, runs along a multiply repeating line of a song from the local music group Bonanza Jellybean: "I know, that I am gorgeous, that is nothing new. When I go to bed tonight it will definitely not be with you." Despite the unambiguous rejection in the lyrics, a direct and autonomous gaze into the camera maintaining steady contact with the audience remains the defining gesture of both the performers as well as the chorus. Even when a pornographic scene marks the end of the performance, the actresses do not lower their eyes in shame; instead, their expressions remain controlled: A queering of the existing situation that stages a coquettish flirt with the camera. Nestes últimos anos, tem-se assistido a um crescente descontentamento na Tailândia. Na minha opinião, a raiz dos nossos problemas reside numa forma de ser-se tailandês, que nunca foi propriamente revista. Somos ensinados a acreditar que os Tailandeses devem ter um elevado sentido moral, visto sermos um país budista. Isto faz com que o nosso Ministério da Cultura ocupe grande parte do seu tempo a censurar os media. O ódio dirigido aos muçulmanos existe no coração de algumas pessoas, mas têm de ocultar os seus verdadeiros sentimentos sob um 'sorriso tailandês'. O meu filme é formalmente semelhante aos meus trabalhos anteriores. Foi feito de forma a observar uma pequena vida em Banguecoque, a cidade dos conflitos, a cidade que fingimos ser civilizada. Este filme enclausura-nos num pequeno quarto de hotel no centro de Banguecoque (o edifício foi já demolido e o hotel relocalizado), de forma a escutarmos algumas opiniões sobre o desenvolvimento da metrópole que, em tailandês é denominada de 'Krung Thep', ou 'Cidade dos Anjos'. Nota: Este documentário foi rodado durante o período de governação do Primeiro-Ministro Thaksin Shinawatra e foi editado quando Thaksin foi deposto do poder. (Thunska Pansittivorakul)

In these past few years, there has been a growing unrest in Thailand. For me, the root of our problem, which has never been revised, is 'Thainess'. We are taught to believe that Thai people should have good morals since ours' is a Buddhist country. This makes our Ministry of Culture spend most of its time working on media censorship. Hatred towards the Muslim occurs in some people's heart but they have to hide their true feelings under a 'Thai smile'. My film is still in the same style as I did before. It was made to observe a small life in Bangkok, the city of conflicts, the town that we're trying to pretend is civilized. O striptease é indissociável da história da exploração da mulher, em termos de uma economia patriarcal, bem como de uma rígida imagética do corpo e das políticas do olhar. Desde inícios dos anos 1990, o 'novo burlesco', derivado de algumas estéticas teatrais dos anos 1930, tem trabalhado este género com humor e uma consciência do self, procurando uma nova experiência do corpo feminino enquanto mapa auto-determinado de atracção. Neste caso, a carga sexual é complementada com um jogo quase dançado de poses e gestos que não têm como alvo o olhar masculino, propagando antes imagens alternativas do corpo. Com Aria de Mustang, a segunda parte de uma planeada trilogia, Katrina Daschner faz uma referência muito clara a este género, ao mesmo tempo em que o expande com signos e imagens lésbico-queer e também sadomasoquistas, que não têm qualquer espaço de expressão nos comuns sistemas representativos hetero-normativos. Desde o início, Daschner clarifica o contexto no qual se posiciona, ou seja, a que olhos e ouvidos se expõe, através das suas performances. Candidatas, que trabalham no meio artístico e cultural lésbico-queer de Viena, vestidas de trajos de equitação, emolduram este cenário eléctrico e glamouroso como se de um coro grego se tratasse, funcionando como ruidosas comentadoras que concluem assim o vídeo. A coreografia da performance, na qual Daschner e duas amantes (todas em figurinos fetichistas) se dão prazer, desenvolve-se a par de uma linha melódica repetida, assinada por uma banda local, os Bonanza Jellybean: "I know, that I am gorgeous, that is nothing new. When I go to bed tonight it will definitely not be with you." Apesar da clara rejeição expressa na letra, um fitar directo e autónomo da câmara, mantendo contacto directo com o espectador, revela-se o gesto que define, quer as performers, quer o coro. Mesmo quando uma cena pornográfica remata o final da performance, as actrizes não baixam o olhar com vergonha; ao invés, as suas expressões permanecem controladas: uma releitura queer da situação existente que encena um lascivo namoro com a câmara. The striptease is accompanied by the history of exploitation of women, in terms of a patriarchal economy as well as a rigid body image and regime of the gaze. Since the early 1990s, "new Burlesque," following from the theatre forms of the 1930s, has net this genre with humour and self awareness and attempted to re-open the female body as a self-determined field of attraction. The sexual charge is, in this case, supplemented with a dance-like game of poses and gestures that does not aim at a purely male gaze, and propagates alternative body images. With Aria de Mustang, the second part of a planned trilogy, Katrina Daschner makes a very clear reference to this genre, but at the same time expands it with queer-lesbian, and also sadomasochistic signs and images, which have no place in common hetero-normative representational systems. Right from the start, Daschner clarifies the context that she positions herself in, that is, which eyes and ears she exposes herself to with her performance. Proponents working in Vienna's queer-lesbian art and culture scene dressed in riding outfits frame the glamorous sparkling setting like a Greek chorus, and function as roaring commentators who conclude the video. The choreography of the performance, in which Daschner and two lovers (all in fetish costumes) enjoy themselves, runs along a multiply repeating line of a song from the local music group Bonanza Jellybean: "I know, that I am gorgeous, that is nothing new. When I go to bed tonight it will definitely not be with you." Despite the unambiguous rejection in the lyrics, a direct and autonomous gaze into the camera maintaining steady contact with the audience remains the defining gesture of both the performers as well as the chorus. Even when a pornographic scene marks the end of the performance, the actresses do not lower their eyes in shame; instead, their expressions remain controlled: A queering of the existing situation that stages a coquettish flirt with the camera.
