Axel vista hoje a sua familia numa Datscha nos arredores de Berlim. Com ele está Michael (Mike) o seu companheiro. Axel quer que Michael conheça a sua família, mas não tem intenção de apresentá-lo como seu companheiro, muito menos afirmar-se como homosexual. Para Mike a mentira é sempre mentira, mas o espírito infantil de Axel não dita assim. Durante a refeição o irmão de Axel (Dietmar) embriaga-se. Também para ele a verdade devia vir ao de cima e desafia o seu irmão para um jogo, "Flaschedrehen" (verdade ou consequência). Prevendo as intenções do irmão Axel excusa-se deixando Dietmar a pressionar a sua mãe. A confusão que daí resulta deixa o Pai prepelexo com a súbita violência de Dietmar. O Pai tenta acalmar Dietmar mas este enfurece-se e deixa a festa. Neste momento, Axel decide revelar-se. O pai ainda baralhado pela atiude de Dietmar não presta atenção a Axel. Quando finalmente pergunta a Axel o que ele tem para dizer, Axel perdeu a vontade e a coragem de falar. Mike está profundamente desapontado. A familia diverte-se com uma sessão de fotografias. Parecm fazer tudo para encenar uma felicidade cheia de buracos. Depois disto Mike não conseguirá encarar a relação com Mike da mesma forma. Flaschenderehen é assim uma not-coming-out story. É uma história acerca do medo de se encarar a verdade e de falar acerca dela. Fazer este filme foi particularmente importante para mim numa altura em que, apesar da Christopher Street Day e da crescente vocação de Berlim como cidade "tolerante", os arredores da capital alemã e o estado envolvente de Brandenburgo, continuam a manifestar de novo de forma procupante, sinais evidentes de intolerância.

Axel sees his family today in a Datscha on the outskirts of Berlin. With him is Michael (Mike) his companion. Axel wants Michael to meet his family, but he has no intention of presenting him as his partner, much less declaring himself homosexual. Adaptada de um romance da feminista Ingeborg Bachman (falecida em 1973), este drama em língua francesa sobre o "amour fou", foi filmado pela realizadora/directora de fotografia Elfi Mikesch. Isabelle Huppert interpreta o papel de uma romancista a braços com uma profunda depressão e angústia existencial. Ela vive em Viena com a muito mais tranquila Malina (Mathieu Carriére), uma fotógrafa. Repleta de simbolismo freudiano, esta história, amiúde surrealista e conturbada, centra-se na nova relação desta mulher com outro homem, cada vez mais inconstante devido ao seu estado de perturbação mental.

Adapted from a novel by feminist Ingeborg Bachman (who died in 1973), this French-language drama of "amour fou" was photographed by filmmaker/cinematographer Elfi Mikesch. Isabelle Huppert stars as a novelist suffering from a severe bout of depression and existential angst. She lives in Vienna with the much calmer Malina (Mathieu Carriére), a photographer. Fraught with Freudian symbolism, the often surreal and convoluted story centres on her new relationship with another man, made increasingly volatile by her troubled mental state.

Nascido em Lisboa, a 24 de Agosto de 1966. Estudou Biologia na Faculdade de Ciências de Lisboa, mas a frequência com que são exibidos os filmes na Cinemateca Portuguesa tornou-se rapidamente incompatível com a licenciatura. Em 1985 ingressou na Escola Superior de Cinema de Lisboa tendo concluído em 1989. De 1989 a 1996 trabalhou como Assistente de Realização e Assistente de Montagem. Em 1996/97 realizou, escreveu, filmou e montou a curta metragem "Parabéns!", que foi seleccionado para o Festival de Cinema de Veneza em 1997, tendo recebido a Menção Honrosa do Júri "pelas suas admiráveis qualidades de realização". Depois de Veneza, "Parabéns!" foi exibido em mais de 60 festivais de cinema pelo mundo for a, incluindo Oberhausen, OutFest, Brisbane e S. Paulo. Em 1997/99 realizou um documentário em duas partes (2 x 60 min.) sobre uma família de imigrantes portugueses que vive em Paris. Em "Esta é a minha casa", ele acompanhou as suas vidas em Paris e a sua jornada de regresso a casa para férias em Trás-os-Montes, no norte de Portugal.Em 1998, em "Viagem à EXPO", acompanhou-os na sua primeira visita à capital portuguesa durante a Exposição Universal de Lisboa, EXPO '98. "O Fantasma" é a sua primeira longa metragem.

Para construir esta história segui de perto, durante vários meses, o trabalho e as pessoas num posto de recolha de lixo em Lisboa. Os "homens do lixo" fazem parte da paisagem urbana. São homens e mulheres cada vez mais novos, "fantasmas", que, enquanto a cidade dorme, apagam sem serem vistos os restos da vida dos outros. Percorrem, no negro da noite, rotas secretas escondidas no labirinto da cidade. Mas "O Fantasma" não é um filme sobre os "homens do lixo". Eles são apenas a âncora no real de onde parti para a ficção. Uma ficção sobre a brutalidade do desejo e a impotência face à rejeição. Quis filmar os gestos íntimos da solidão de um corpo perante a impossibilidade da reciprocidade do amor. Demorei quase um ano a encontrar os actores. Não me interessava que tivessem qualquer experiência de representação. Procurei corpos e olhares virgens. Um corpo tenso e palpável, feito de músculos e pele. Um nariz que fareja. Uma boca que arfa. Uma língua que lambe. Um sexo insaciável. Um olhar luminoso e negro, impiedoso e implacável. Encontrei o Sérgio.

Born in Lisbon, on August 24, 1966. He studied Biology at the Faculty of Sciences of Lisbon, but the frequency with which films were shown at the Cinemateca Portuguesa quickly became incompatible with the degree. In 1985 he entered the Escola Superior de Cinema de Lisboa and graduated in 1989. From 1989 to 1996 he worked as Assistant Director and Assistant Editor. In 1996/97 he made, wrote, filmed and edited the short film "Congratulations!", which was selected for the Venice Film Festival in 1997, having received the Jury's Honorable Mention "for its admirable directing qualities" ; . To create this story, I closely followed, for several months, the work and people at a garbage collection station in Lisbon. The "garbage men" are part of the urban landscape. They are increasingly younger men and women, "ghosts", who, while the city sleeps, erase the remains of other people's lives without being seen. In the black of night, they travel secret routes hidden in the city's labyrinth. But "The Phantom" It's not a film about "trash men". They are just the anchor in reality from which I started to fiction. A fiction about the brutality of desire and impotence in the face of exclusion.
